Aggressive Driving Causes Car Accidents
Houston is one of the most congested cities in the country. The average Houstonian spends approximately two full days per year sitting in traffic. The hours spent stuck in gridlock can push any driver to the breaking point. However, when aggressive driving leads to car accidents, people can get hurt.
Road Rage
Everyone gets frustrated driving in heavy traffic. Sometimes this frustration boils over into anger. When drivers get angry enough to retaliate or break the rules of the road, “Road rage” is the result. Although there have always been dangerous drivers, road rage has only recently become a term of art. Drivers can revenge drive and take risks that they wouldn’t normally take. Drivers are at an increased danger of causing an accident when road rage takes over.
Aggressive driving, or road rage, takes many forms, including:
- Speeding
- Tailgating
- Running stop signs or red lights
- Passing on the right
- Weaving in and out of traffic
- Cutting off other drivers
- Denying the right of way at a turn or stop sign
- Inappropriate hand gestures
There is a fine line between bad driving and aggressive driving. That line is crossed when drivers start thinking “I’m going to teach that other guy a lesson!” A rational driver, who isn’t consumed with rage, can focus on accident avoidance. A driver in a fit of aggressive rage is more concerned about punishing another driver or breaking the law to get where they want to go. Those invincible aggressive drivers can kill!
An Increasing Number of Car Accidents are Caused by Aggressive Driving
Aggressive driving plays a role in a lot of accidents across Texas. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that speeding causes over 130,000 accidents per year. A number of accidents were caused by failing to yield, and unsafe passing caused over 2,000 wrecks. Over 1,200 accidents in 2015 were caused by road rage on the part of one of the drivers.
