The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the 50% higher risk of foot and leg amputations for those taking the Type 2 Diabetes drug, Invokana. The drug safety communication issued in May 2017 advised that the active ingredient, canagliflozin doubled the risk compared to patients on a placebo.
The most common amputations are toes and foot, but amputations above and below the knee were also reported. In an earlier drug safety communication, the FDA warned that SGLT2 inhibitors, such as Invokana can also cause a serious medical condition called ketoacidosis, which means dangerous levels of acid in the blood, which may require hospitalization.
